Lot's Wife: Don't Look Back

Genesis 19:12-261 min 14 s

She left the city, but her heart stayed behind.

The verse

“And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take…”

Genesis 19:12-26 · KJV

Imagine hearing that your home is about to be destroyed, and that you have only a few hours to leave. Would you grab your things? Would you argue? Would you stall?

Lot's family faced that morning. One of them did not make it out. The Bible tells us why in just a few words.

The story

Sodom was a rich, proud city, and the wrongdoing there had grown so great that it had reached God. Two angels came to Lot with a warning. They asked if he had any family in the city. Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, anyone. Bring them all out, they said, because the Lord had sent them to destroy the place.

Lot went to his sons-in-law and told them to get out, for the Lord would destroy the city. But they thought he was joking. They laughed it off. Nobody listened to him.

When morning came, the angels urged Lot on. Get up, take your wife and your two daughters, or you will be swept away. But Lot lingered. He hesitated, and he could not seem to make himself leave.

So the angels took hold of his hand, and the hands of his wife and his two daughters, and led them out of the city. The Bible says this was because “the LORD being merciful unto him.” Then came the plain instruction: “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee.”

Lot asked if they could flee to a small nearby town instead of the mountain, and the request was granted. The sun was up when he reached it. Then fire and brimstone rained down from the Lord on Sodom and Gomorrah. The cities and everything in the plain were overthrown.

Lot's wife was walking behind him. She looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Why one look mattered

The story is short, and it does not tell us what she was thinking. We are not told if she grieved, doubted, or simply wanted one more glimpse of home. We only know that the one thing they were told not to do was the thing she did.

Notice how much mercy is in this chapter. The angels did not just shout directions. They took the family by the hand and led them out. Lot had waited, and they still pulled him along. Rescue was real, and it was kind.

The instruction was clear, too. “Look not behind thee” was not a cruel rule. It was part of getting out alive. Jesus later pointed to this moment and told people to remember Lot's wife. He used her as a warning, a reminder that being rescued means going forward and not holding on to what God is rescuing us from.

Key verse

But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:26 · KJV

Learning to walk forward

Most of us will never flee a burning city. But many of us know what it is like to be pulled between where we were and where God is leading. An old habit. A hurtful relationship. A way of life that looked good from far away but kept us stuck. Looking back can feel harmless, even natural.

The lesson is not that we should never remember our past or feel sad about what we leave behind. It is that we should not let our hearts stay there. When God is leading you out of something, trust that he knows what he is doing, and keep your steps pointed ahead.

It may help to take it one step at a time. Pray when the pull comes. Tell a trusted friend. Open your Bible and read something that reminds you where you are headed. God was merciful to Lot, who hesitated, and he is patient with you too.
