Why did Jesus weep at Lazarus's tomb if he knew he would raise him?

John tells us Jesus already knew what he was about to do (John 11:4, 11). So his tears were not despair. The text says that when he saw Mary and the others weeping, "he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled" (John 11:33), and then "Jesus wept" (John 11:35).

Two things seem to be happening. He is moved by the grief of people he loves, sharing it rather than standing above it. And he is troubled by death itself, the enemy he came to defeat. Knowing the ending did not make him cold to the middle.

For us, that means our tears are not a lack of faith. Jesus knew the resurrection was minutes away and still wept with his friends.

  • John 11:33-35
  • John 11:4
  • Romans 12:15
